Museum Town (2019)

When The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) was conceived it was a revolutionary idea. Instead of fitting the mold of what was expected for an art museum, the team behind MASS MoCA sought out a space beyond the confines of a metropolitan center. Presenting contemporary art—which already breaks many rules on its own—in a larger space and in an area you wouldn’t expect meant limitless possibilities but also an uphill battle just to get the project started. MASS MoCA opened in 1999 in the former Sprague Electric factory in North Adams, MA. This small New England city used to be a thriving hub of factories but like many other cities in America felt the economic after effects when many of these factories closed in the 1980s. MASS MoCA took over a large campus of building complete with bridges and moats and 100k square feet of gallery space. They believed in a light touch; keeping the integrity of the buildings and maintaining their historic dignity while also making each building a functional gallery space. MASS MoCA transformed North Adams into an artist’s community and remains one of the largest spaces for contemporary art in the world.

On the 20th anniversary of MASS MoCA, the documentary Museum Town (2019) tells the fascinating story of the museum’s conception, development and present day work all in the scope of the people who made it happen and the community it exists in. The documentary was directed by Jennifer Trainer, a journalist who in the mid 1980s covered the story of MASS MoCA’s conception and soon became part of its development, Museum (2019). It includes narration by Meryl Streep as well as various talking heads, including local politicians, museum curators and a volunteer who had worked for over 40 years at Sprague and continued to dedicated herself to the campus that had meant so much to her. I was particularly interested in how the film followed the exhibition of artist Nick Cave known for his mixed media art which includes sculptures, found objects and performance art. We get insight into what it takes to plan and install a large scale contemporary art exhibit.

Museum Town beautifully captures a community in transition and a space that offers limitless possibilities for displaying contemporary art in its many forms. It will have you booking your trip to North Adams for a visit.

Sundance: CODA

What a way to kick off my very first Sundance Film Festival! The first feature film I had the pleasure to see, CODA, is a new favorite and one I’ll be recommending for months to come.

Set in Gloucester, Massachusetts, CODA (an acronym for Children of Deaf Adults) stars Emilia Jones as Ruby, the only hearing member of a deaf family. Her father Frank (Troy Kotsur) manages a struggling fishing business which is bolstered by the help of his wife Jackie (Marlee Matlin), his deaf son Leo (Daniel Durant) and his hearing daughter. The family depends on Ruby to interpret on their behalf, causing her to bear more burden on the high school teenager. But Ruby is on her own journey.  Ruby joins the high school choir where she must overcome her shyness, accept the tough-love tutoring of her singing coach Bernardo (Eugenio Derbez) and expose her vulnerability to her crush and duet partner Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). Can Ruby find her voice or will she have to sacrifice it to help her family survive their current hardship?

Director Siân Heder absolutely delivers with this feel-good drama that offers moments of joy, sadness and hope. CODA is funny and charming and sends its viewers on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. It’s effective not only as a coming-of-age story but an exploration of a unique family dynamic. Heder cast deaf actors Matlin, Kotsur, and Durant in the roles of the deaf family members. Potential caricature is avoided with authentic and multi-dimensional characters performed by  talented actors. Representation matters and Heder clearly demonstrates that with this thoughtfully crafted film. Another way CODA is effective is in evoking empathy for the plight of the characters and not for their disability. These are fiercely independent individuals who face a battle to thrive in a society of people who do not or chose not to understand. It’s beautiful to see the way they support each other especially as their youngest, who they’ve depended on for so long, is ready to spread her wings and fly.

TIFF Review: Assassination Nation

“You had it coming, America.”

When a movie starts with a preview of trigger warnings you know you’ll be in for a wild ride. Sam Levinson’s Assassination Nation was one of my most anticipated films of TIFF and it delivered on many fronts. This modern take on the Salem witch trials is dark, twisted, raunchy and violent. It follows the story of four teens as they navigate their senior year with all the peer pressure that comes with it but kicked up several notches when key members of the community get hacked. Led by Odessa Young, the four young women including Hari Nef, Suki Waterhouse and Abra, the town of Salem begins to spiral out of control and they become the target of the community’s blood thirsty need for their brand of justice. On the surface this might seem like another scary movie to watch on Halloween but on a deeper level it delivers some cutting critiques about modern day society. It explores peer pressure, the sexualization of young women, toxic masculinity, privacy, doxxing, public shaming, mob mentally, misplaced righteousness and distrust of authority. And if you’re like me and shy away from horror films, this one has some violence but there is so much to enjoy from the visual imagery, costumes, lighting cinematography, typography that makes it well worth the gory scenes. I loved the female empowerment message and found myself pumping my fist in the air and cheering the protagonists on. Assassination Nation is not one to miss.
